Slow Cooked Duck Legs in Orange
How fancy does duck sound? Sounds like something I should be eating at Kempinski and not in my ka apartment in eastlands. As in who eats duck at home? who even buys it? For me, I thought that duck was something cooked by diplomats and high end chefs. Despite studying abroad, where duck was more accessible, I still never cooked it because I felt like it was just too fancy or too pricey or a combination of both. A few weeks ago one of the members of Foodies Club Nairobi posted that he was rearing ducks and I got curious on the cost. I was expecting to be told Ksh 5,000 ($50) but surprisingly the price was almost the same as Kuku kienyeji bought in a fancy place. It is Ksh 1,000. I ordered for one ASAP and had no idea what i would be doing with it. When it came I read up on it and really and I mean REALLY wanted to make duck confit but each week I forgot to buy the duck fat. Which does cost a pretty penny about 900 for a 400g jar. After 3 weekends I decided to try something different but still popular. That’s how I decided to do the slow cooked duck in orange. I used my slow cooker for this dish but if you do not have one you can make the same meal in the oven on low for about 3 hours at 150 degrees celsius.
This is one of those dishes you make when you want to impress your family or a certain man but don’t want to break the bank. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Happy cooking!

Funnny you should write about duck coz i was just asking a friend where to get Duck in Nairobi hehehe. We used to rear them growing up for about two years i think but I never got round to cooking it they were like two or three ducks. My family friend aunt brought us some last year she rears them and then she proceeded to make them kuku kienyeji style which i was not too fond of i prefer my duck roasted.
