I Love Mondays: Tapas Ceviche

One thing I love about the Nairobi restaurant scene is how much it has grown in the last few years. Kenyans do not really have an eating out culture and when we do, we go out for Nyama choma (barbecued meat) and beers despite having lots of restaurants  with lots of different cuisines. However in those few years Kenyans have gotten curious about food and are now going out to try all these different cuisines and I like it.

One thing I look forward to, though, is all these restaurants being affordable. To have a nice meal costing Ksh 500 or less instead of one having to pay ksh 1200 for steak and chips. I look forward to a time when going out to a restaurant to eat will not be something that only the upper middle class and the rich can afford to do often. One day I know we will get there. I have a dream hehe

This long story leads me to my experience at Tapas Ceviche Bar a couple of weeks ago.  The Mr and I decided to pay a visit to Westgate as he had never been there since it reopened. After walking around and a bit of shopping we got hungry and decided to try something new.  Tapas Ceviche is located inside Westgate Mall, on the first floor right next to the main entrance. This cozy restaurant is a must visit.

First Impressions, Ambiance and Deco

We went in the evening and were welcomed by a hostess who asked us where we wanted to sit. We chose to sit outside as it was a bit of a cold night. The place had beautiful deco and mood lighting that made it look really cosy. The background music was just right.

Service

From the hostess to our waiter, we received impeccable service. Our waiter was attentive. I really wish I got his name. He got our orders great, took time to explain the menu to us and how the food was prepared in case we had a query on that. He was also quick to clear our table when we finished yet not too quick. You know its a delicate balance.

Drinks

We had a mojito and a gin and  tonic. Both were enjoyable though nothing spectacular to write home about. I wish I had a sangria as I have heard good things about it since.  I will definitely give it a try  next time.

Food

We had 3 tapas. a chicken tortilla wrap, mixed paella and a raw fish dish whose name I can not remember. I enjoyed all three dishes but the paella, THE PAELLA, that paella man was just everything. There is a certain spice they used. I could not place my fingers on it. It tasted different from any rice dish I have ever had. As good as or maybe even better than any paella I have ever had in this world yes WORLD.

Price

The tapas cost upwards of ksh 300 and at lunch time you can have any choice of tapas for 1050. Drinks are upwards of 200 for a soft drink, cocktails start from around ksh 500.

Verdict

I liked the place, Mr liked the place. I would definitely be going back for some paella
