Hahahhaha so how about that title? Cheese board mwitu. hahahahahah I just died a little and went to heaven. Would you believe I just learnt the name mwitu like in the last maybe 3 years. Growing up I never heard of that word. I grew up in Parklands. Not the bougie side but not the ghetto either. For some reason chips were never sold on the streets so we never had chips mwitu.

So for those of you who aren’t Kenyan or those who were born on the upper side of Nairobi, Mwitu is a forest if you were to use direct translation. In Nairobi or Kenyan slang mwitu means roadside. So chips mwitu or sausage mwitu is chips sold by the roadside. In today,s slang it also refers to counterfeit items so e.g MAC mwitu is fake MAC.

Now my cheese platter today is a mwitu because it is fake. It’s a starters cheese platter. Easy and cheap too. Who said that even you and I who do not know everything about putting together a cheese board can not enjoy something that is similar?

Well my cheese platter mwitu is pretty simple. All you need is:

  • Your favourite cheese, preferably a hard one that is not too aged and not smelly. eg mild gouda , colby or young cheddar. I used gouda.

The reason I suggest young hard cheese for a starter is the flavour is not overwhelming and neither the smell. Anyone can take it down

  • Your favourite cold cuts. Something spicy is always nice so salami or chorizo. Also chorizo sausages like the small ones would be great, prosciutto. I tried polony and did not like it much but it is pocket friendly and known and liked by many.
  • Fruit; slices green apple, peaches, grapes, pear or strawberries all work great.

  • Jams: sweet jams are amazing but my (African Kaya’s) sweet chilli jam is heaven with some cheese and chorizo.
  • Nuts are a good addition too I had none so I used African Kaya’s Almond butter.

How much does it cost?

I bought 100g gouda at KSh 430

The sweet chilli jam is Ksh 300 for 200 grams you only need a few tablesoons so say Ksh 50

The chorizo was Ksh 275

The polony Ksh 185
2 tablespoons African Kaya’s Almond Butter Ksh 20

1 peach Ksh 165 (ridiculous right?)

1 Apple Ksh 30

Total Ksh 1,155 this is enough for 4 so ksh 288 per person.
